Albright College: Examining Voting Rights in 2021 and Beyond

by Carey Manzolillo

Reading, PA (08/31/2021) — A free, virtual Constitution Day lecture (Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.) sponsored by the Albright College Political Science Department will explore what past and recent court cases tell us about changes in United States voting rights. Register via Zoom.

Shawn Donahue, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor in University of Buffalo's Department of Political Science, will discuss the trajectory of voting rights legal theory since Thornburg v. Gingles (1986), with an in-depth look at recent cases, such as Shelby County v. Holder (2013) and Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee (2021).

Participants will learn about gerrymandering in the 2021-22 redistricting cycle, preclearance, vote dilution and new restrictive voting measures in Arizona, Florida, Georgia and Texas.

In addition to Political Science, Albright College offers related academic programs in Crime and Justice, International Relations, Legal Studies, and Public Policy and Administration.
