Albright College Theatre to Perform "Orlando," Feb. 16-19

by Carey Manzolillo

Reading, PA (02/06/2023) — The Albright College Domino Players and Theatre Department present "Orlando," written by Sarah Ruhl, adapted from Virginia Woolf and directed by Andrea Hart, Thur.-Sat., Feb. 16-18, 8 p.m. and Sun., Feb. 19, 2 p.m., in the Center for the Arts Theatre at Albright College. For tickets, visit albright.edu/tickets or call 610-921-7547.

The play's main character, Orlando, is a dashing Elizabethan nobleman who lives for 500 years. Halfway through his adventurous life, Orlando awakens from a seven-day slumber to find he has become a woman. He, now she, learns to survive the 19th and 20th centuries by grappling with what it means to live fully in the present moment, in their own skin, gender and time.

"Ruhl's play asks more questions than it answers, and perhaps that is the point," says Director Andrea Hart. "Orlando spends the play searching for the meaning in every word and every moment. However, the play doesn't reveal the great secrets of life to its protagonist or its audience. Instead, it suggests that all we can do to quell the anxiety of the age is live in the present moment."

Albright College's national award-winning theatre program and Domino Players theatre company has been invited to perform at Kennedy festival II 11 times in the last 15 years.

Named a top national college by Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education, Albright College (founded 1856) is home to a diverse community of learners who cultivate integrity, curiosity, connection and resilience.
